Breast augmentation (“augmentation mammaplasty”) is a surgical procedure that increases the size and projection of the breasts. It is routinely performed by Dr. Samson here in Daytona Beach. Breast augmentation is also used to correct asymmetry of the breasts. Either a unilateral augmentation (one breast only) or bilateral breast augmentation (both breasts) can be performed depending on the patient’s needs. Since breast implants are not lifetime devices, they may need to be eventually replaced. In this case, breast implant removal can be performed and new implants can be inserted.
The best candidates for breast augmentation have realistic expectations for the procedure, are over the age of 18, are in good physical and mental health, and do not smoke.
Consultation with either Dr. Samson can help you determine if you are an ideal candidate for breast augmentation in the Daytona Beach area. Before your consultation, you should view breast augmentation photos and review your options with size, implant type, and implant placement. During your consultation we will also have suggestions for you based on your health history and body type and chest measurements. You will have the opportunity to see and feel the latest saline and silicone breast implant devices, and to try on breast implant sizers with the help of our nursing staff.. Together, you and your plastic surgeon will decide which breast augmentation techniques and options are right for you.
There are many techniques and options available with breast augmentation. Remember that we will help guide you through the decision-making process to help you get the best results possible.
Periareolar: The incision is made across or around the areola and involves minimal scarring at the edge of areola and breast skin.
Inframammary: This is the most frequently used technique. The incision follows the crease beneath the breast where the implant will be inserted. Scars will be hidden in the folds of the skin.
Transaxillary: An incision is made near the armpit and the implants are typically placed below the chest muscles. No incisions are made on the breasts, and scars are hidden under the arm.
Transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA): This technique is performed with an incision in the navel. The implant is inserted through the incision and worked upward through the body to the breast. There is no visible scarring with this technique. However, TUBA breast augmentation limits a few choices including implant type and placement.
Subglandular: Implants are placed above the pectoral muscles and under the mammary glands. This type of placement can be beneficial in patients with a loose skin envelope, asymmetry, or in bodybuilders.
Submuscular: Implants are placed below the pectoral muscles. This placement provides more support to the implant, and implant rippling is less likely to occur. It is beneficial when maximum implant tissue coverage is desirable.
Regardless of the techniques you have decided on for your breast augmentation surgery, the procedure in its simplest form involves one incision, creating a pocket where the implant will be inserted, adjusting the implant within the pocket, and closing the incisions with sutures. General anesthesia is typically used with this procedure and it takes from one to two hours to perform.
Breast augmentation recovery time will vary depending on the surgery technique, implant size, and your body’s reaction to the procedure. All Daytona Beach breast augmentation patients should arrange to have someone take care of them for the first 24-48 hours following surgery. Activity should be reduced for a few days, and soreness and swelling will last for a few weeks. You will be prescribed medication to help ease the pain. Your surgeon will give you instructions regarding when to wear a compression garment and support bras, and how to care for any drains or bandages. The implants may sit high on the chest for a few weeks but will eventually settle into the ideal position. Final results should be apparent within a few months.
As with any surgery, there are some risks involved with breast augmentation. These include:
The cost of breast augmentation varies depending on the type of implants used, techniques used, your surgeon, your geographical location, and other fees including costs for the surgical facility, anesthesia, medical tests and prescriptions. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the national average physician/surgeon fee for breast augmentation was $3,694 in 2011. Because of the various costs associated with surgery, we also offer breast augmentation and cosmetic surgery financing options through CareCredit. Dr. Samson can give you an accurate cost estimate for your specific needs during a one-on-one consultation.
